The newly released prismatic LiFePO4 cell (model MB56) may be unfamiliar to some DIY battery enthusiasts. If you plan to build a battery pack using this cell, which BMS should you choose? This guide will help you make an informed decision.
Let’s start by reviewing the key specifications of the MB56 cell:
Model: MB56
Type: Prismatic LiFePO4 Cell
Nominal Voltage: 3.2V
Nominal Capacity: 628Ah
Maximum Continuous Discharge Power: 0.5P
Maximum Continuous Charge Power: 0.5P
To select the right BMS, you must first define your battery pack’s requirements:
What is your target battery voltage?
What application will the battery be used for?
What continuous output power do you need?
Based on your target voltage:
For a 12V battery pack, use a 4S BMS.
For a 24V battery pack, use an 8S BMS.
For a 48V battery pack, use a 16S BMS.
Home Energy Storage System:
If you are building a home energy storage system, choose a BMS with communication protocol functionality (such as CAN bus or RS485). This enables the battery to communicate with the inverter, allowing you to monitor the battery’s status via the inverter. For larger systems with multiple batteries in parallel, ensure the BMS has two communication interfaces to monitor each battery individually through the inverter or a host computer.
RV Power System:
For RV applications, consider the physical size of the battery pack and prioritize a BMS with Bluetooth app monitoring. This allows you to connect to the battery via Bluetooth, download the BMS manufacturer’s app, and monitor the battery’s performance conveniently.
Note: The MB56 is designed for energy storage systems and is not recommended for electric vehicles (EVs).
Current Rating Considerations
The MB56 has a maximum charge and discharge power rating of 0.5P, meaning the maximum continuous current should not exceed 314A (0.5 * 628Ah). When selecting a BMS, ensure its maximum current rating is below 314A. If your application requires lower output power, you can choose a BMS with a lower current rating to reduce costs.
Home Energy Storage: Use a 16S 300A BMS with communication protocol. This configuration supports a continuous output of 15kW, sufficient for most household needs.
RV Power System: Use a 4S 300A BMS with Bluetooth app monitoring. This setup provides a continuous output of 3.6kW, suitable for most RV appliances.
